Word in Motion

It's been a busy year so far - I've just made a 20 second film of a poem by Mikill Pane. It's part of Word in Motion, an initiative to bring together poets and moving image to uplift and inspire London commuters during the bleak month of January.

Other collaborators include: Ray Davis / Benjamin Zephaniah / Studio of Williamson Curran / John Burgerman / Malcolm Garrett / Trunk / Cerys Matthews / Why Not Associates / Jarvis Cocker / Studio AKA.

From 16th January 2012 the films will be on display across 60 digital screens on the London Underground every morning (7am - 10am) and evening (4pm - 7pm) for two weeks. At Angel, Camden Town, Oxford Circus, Bond Street, Charing Cross, Covent Garden, Knightsbridge, Paddington, Euston, Piccadilly Circus, Victoria and Waterloo.

It's estimated that 1.5 million commuters will see the films, I hope you're one of them.

My cards have been selected to be part of the new 'GSA Collection', which is a range of contemporary products produced by graduates of Glasgow School of Art. The whole 'Big Hair' range is available in the GSA shop. The profits raised from the shop go back in to the School to support its educational mission and the upkeep of the fabulous Mackintosh Building.

This stunningly shot film captures the same languorous atmosphere that I remember from the Haruki Murakami novel. Jonny Greenwood's original music and Cinematography by Ping Bin Lee played significant roles in shaping this visually inspiring film. I wish I'd known about the poster competition before the deadline.

Also - I've pledged one of my prints to help the fund-raising project Today, We Are All Japanese (See their poster above). Perhaps you also want to pledge a piece of artwork to help those affected by the Tōhoku Earthquake and Tsunami.

Earlier this year I was lucky enough to be asked to produce a hand-drawn animated crying sequence for the Royal Ballet's new full length version of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. Those that missed the ballet at the Royal Opera House can see it in full on the BBC iPlayer.

(Available until 30 April 2011.)

Alice is danced by Royal Ballet's rising star Lauren Cuthbertson. Choreography by Christopher Wheeldon, Design by Bob Crowley, Projection design by Jon Discoll and Gemma Carrington.

Museum of Everything

Due to overwhelming public demand, Exhibition #3 at the Museum of Everything will re-open for 5 more weeks. It's well worth making the trip to Primrose Hill for a glimpse at Sir Peter Blake's private collection of curios. A personal favourite was a room of embroideries by Ted Willcox (2nd image).

Most of us know it as Spirograph, but many Istanbul street vendors sell little sets packaged as Sihirli Daireler (Magic Circles). One of the said street vendors takes the credit for the bottom two pics. These magic patterns never fail to amaze me.

I've just returned from an inspiring trip to Istanbul.

My holiday read was Istanbul: Memories and the City by Orhan Pamuk. There is a whole chapter devoted to Hüzün, the Turkish word for Melancholy. He writes- "hüzün, which denotes a melancholy that is communal rather than private. Offering no clarity; veiling reality instead, hüzün brings us comfort, softening the view like the condensation on a window when a tea kettle has been spouting steam on a winter's day."

I bought this little publication of firework drawings by Mike Mills a month or so ago from Concrete Hermit and thought this was the right time to show it. Mike Mills says, "I read that fireworks were first used in China in the 12th Century to scare off negative spirits".

I was lucky enough to join in with the Hambledon's 10th Birthday celebrations. It was great to see the shop in the flesh as I'd previously only browsed at their wonderful wares via the Robert Ryan illustrated website.

Slowcoast

On 21 June my friend Nick Hand set off from Bristol on a sponsored bike ride around the coast of Great Britain. He's been making soundslide films along the way of artisans and uploading them on his Slowcoast website.

The images above are taken from Nick's Soundslide interview with Paul Smith. Other personal favourites are of Old Town Outfitters, Bill Bontoft the stick maker, Tilda Swinton's and Mark Cousins' Pilgrimage Film Festival, RS Bowie Bike shop and Aardman animation. But they are all so very inspiring. It's such a worthwhile project, 3707 miles in (and counting) he's raised money and shown us the rich variety of dedicated artisans that populate our coastline.

Cards at Constructive Lives

I first came across Constructive Lives in a Design Week article about its identity and shop fit by Multistorey. As soon as I saw the stunning design, based on the geometric Ndebele wall murals of South Africa, I got in touch to see if they would like to stock my cards. I'm happy to say they did and the latest delivery of cards arrived last week.

Exciting pattern sheets

My fascination with patterns and grid systems started young. I recently rediscovered this Altair design book in my parents loft, and was interested to read in it that the patterns were developed by the biologist Ensor Holiday whilst he was convalescing after a car crash in the 1960's. The patterns were the result of complex mathematical research into the recurrence and links between certain designs all over the world, from the pottery of Italy to stained glass windows in a French cathedral to patterns on Persian tiles. As Ensor Holiday's work progressed his friends would pester him for designs to take home, as everyone felt an irresistible urge to colour them in.

I created my own skeletal grid out of decagons as the basis of an end paper design (top). This is a work in progress image of the piece I produced for The Hambledon's We are Ten publication. I shall tell all about this when it launches.

And for other grid / pattern fanatics- there's a perfect book out there called Grid Index by Carsten Nicolai. I might just have to update my exciting pattern sheet collection.
