A selection of my Instagram pictures from an inspiring trip to San Francisco at the end of last year. The top image is a sketch I did near where we stayed. As someone who has a love of overhead cables and wires, I was in my element.

instamatic pictures

Following on from my last blog about my Grandpa's instamatic Kodak camera on things&people, here's a few of the random pictures I took with the camera. This was at a time when it was still easy to buy the film and get it developed.

Here's my 20 second film of a poem by Mikill Pane. It was an ambitious project to get done in a week, but was a wonderful opportunity to indulge my love of hand drawn typography. I hand animated and painted all the artwork, which was composited in After Effects by Jason Guest.

Also, please note the film is silent.

Word in Motion

It's been a busy year so far - I've just made a 20 second film of a poem by Mikill Pane. It's part of Word in Motion, an initiative to bring together poets and moving image to uplift and inspire London commuters during the bleak month of January.

Other collaborators include: Ray Davis / Benjamin Zephaniah / Studio of Williamson Curran / John Burgerman / Malcolm Garrett / Trunk / Cerys Matthews / Why Not Associates / Jarvis Cocker / Studio AKA.

From 16th January 2012 the films will be on display across 60 digital screens on the London Underground every morning (7am - 10am) and evening (4pm - 7pm) for two weeks. At Angel, Camden Town, Oxford Circus, Bond Street, Charing Cross, Covent Garden, Knightsbridge, Paddington, Euston, Piccadilly Circus, Victoria and Waterloo.

It's estimated that 1.5 million commuters will see the films, I hope you're one of them.

Having just made my way to the polling station, I was thinking about the first time I went to cast my vote wearing stripy trousers, which as I now recall happened to be the colours of the 3 main political parties.

Below is an image I created as part of an ongoing collaborative project with Joanna Rucklidge, that we will show in full one day.

Numbers

I've always been into numbers and when a date comes along like it has today (09.09.09) I get a bit more excited about it than most other people. I'd been eagerly waiting since 1988 for my Birthday to arrive last year on 08.08.08.

Above is a piece I made for Lisa (Happy Birthday) and my Birthday invite last year.

Exciting pattern sheets

My fascination with patterns and grid systems started young. I recently rediscovered this Altair design book in my parents loft, and was interested to read in it that the patterns were developed by the biologist Ensor Holiday whilst he was convalescing after a car crash in the 1960's. The patterns were the result of complex mathematical research into the recurrence and links between certain designs all over the world, from the pottery of Italy to stained glass windows in a French cathedral to patterns on Persian tiles. As Ensor Holiday's work progressed his friends would pester him for designs to take home, as everyone felt an irresistible urge to colour them in.

I created my own skeletal grid out of decagons as the basis of an end paper design (top). This is a work in progress image of the piece I produced for The Hambledon's We are Ten publication. I shall tell all about this when it launches.

And for other grid / pattern fanatics- there's a perfect book out there called Grid Index by Carsten Nicolai. I might just have to update my exciting pattern sheet collection.
